The Ghana Science Centre Project

Tops Learning Systems is establishing a new teaching and learning Science and Math Resource Centre for children in Accra, Ghana. The purpose of this centre is to create awareness about, and disseminate the learning of, science, math and technology among children, young people and teachers in the African sub-region.

Over the last two years, we have been working on this tremendously exciting project. After our series of science clinics for children, teacher workshops and exhibitions, we have taken everyone's views we collected through our surveys, questionnaires and focus groups on board. We are turning these feedbacks into this exciting project in TOPS' history.

This centre will focus on the use of hands-on activities, simple local materials and experimentation to get children and young people interested in learning science, math and technology. We want to provide opportunties for professional development of science teachers, school visits and workshops in science and math in the African sub-region.

The centre will also host interactive scientific exhibits, conferences, educational programs and positively contribute to science literacy in Ghana, Africa and the developing world. Facilities at the centre include a computer room, an exhibition hall, presentation and audio-visual equipment. The place will be opened to all schools, educationists and people interested in promoting inquiry learning among children.

This Centre is a huge step foward for disseminating inquiry-based, hands-on and fun science and math learning in Sub-Saharan Africa. We are delighted that Tops Learning System has the vision to take this initiative foward.

We have completed building this science and math resource centre structure. Before we can become operational in 2011, we need to raise significant external funds to equip the centre with work stations, furniture, audi-visuals and materials for children's use. We are relying on additional support from al our partners.
